The Chalkboard Cafe (Waterloo)

Haven't been blogging for awhile because of all the eating in the silly season, how we are getting back to our normal routine, search of the best coffee is back on the To-Do list again...

The Chalkboard Cafe took over the old location of Patisse (now in Chippendale). I love Patisse, but let's not compare the 2 in this blog and only review on The Chalkboard Cafe.

It is located inside the building where there are heaps of home decor shops around it. The place has a rustic feel with the decor, and it is quite pleasant to be sitting at the cafe.

Smoked Salmon Benedict

I always like to order eggs benedict at a new cafe that I have never been, as it shows the chef's skills... I will be blunt with the dish, the poached egg was a bit towards the over-cooked side, the yolk wasn't runny; the salmon was cooked as it has been sitting between the potato cake and the egg for a long while; the potato cake was soggy, there was no crunch to it; and the hollandaise sauce was not up to standard, too acidic and too runny. On the other hand, the eggs benedict with bacon was a bit better because of the crunchy bacon strips.

Breakfast Tasting Plate

The comment about the Breakfast Tasting plate was alright, and nothing to shout about. It would be nicer to have a bit of separation of the hollandaise sauce and the ice-cream. It is not that nice to have the two mixed together.

The coffee was only a pass, again nothing special.

Comments: A lot of potential for this cafe, however a lot of improvements are needed. The quality of the hollandaise sauce will need to be reviewed; the procedure of the putting up the eggs benedict will need to be looked at to prevent the salmon being cooked; the plating of the Breakfast Tasting Plate would need to be adjusted (or even change of serving dish).
