Etro Bistro (Perth, WA)

On Sun 26 January, 2014

Etro's Barista
For the OZ day long weekend, we decided to head over to Western Australia for a few days to sample their delicious wine in Margaret River. We were pleasantly surprised with the wineries of how established they are, and also the food were absolutely awesome! Fair enough that the price is in the fine dining range, but the quality of them certainly have lived up to it.

Enough of the blabbling about the trip, let's talk about the Cafe we went to on the weekend. Not sure if it was the OZ Day long weekend or simply they open late on Sundays, we were struggling to find a cafe that open around the time that we were awake. Around the CBD area, there aren't much places open at 10am. However, we managed to find this nice Bistro / Cafe just around our accommodation. And the food was in the GREAT category!

Regular Cappuccino
The Barista is a funny fella, he certainly had lighten up the cafe with his smiles and jokes! His coffee are also ok, I ordered a regular Cappuccino, and he said, "Just to let you know, it is an upside down Cappuccino!..." Just when I have this invisible question mark on top of my head, he continued, "I have put the chocolate in first before I pour the milk in!" Now whether that is how you called an upside down Cappuccino or not, it doesn't matter. It made the whole breakfast a more enjoyable one, that's for sure! I didn't managed to get a photo of the Iced Chocolate. I was told that it wasn't too sweet and just the right sweetness.

Now the food, I wasn't too hungry, so I had the Light Start Brekkie. It looks quite bland, however the guacamole underneath the smoked salmon was delicious! Mixed with the runny egg yolk from the perfectly poached eggs, I was in heaven! It didn't take me long to polish the plate.

My girlfriend ordered the Duck Confit Crepe, and no wonder it was the signature dish, the mornay sauce made the dish. With Lou couldn't finished it on her own, I was more than happy to clean it up, I almost licked the plate...

Ming & Wenni's dish also look very delicious.

Comments: A cafe recommended for the delicious food! If you are a fan of duck, you have to have the Duck Confit Crepe!

John Montagu Cafe (Wooloomooloo)

On Sun 19 January, 2014

John Montagu
Wooloomooloo

Tucked away in Wooloomooloo, a small sandwich cafe which only opened in Nov '13, run by a few enthusiastic & young individuals. The menu is short and simple, but the quality of the sandwiches are nothing short of flavours!

Elderflower and Mint Soda
We started off with a refreshing drink that looks like a mojito cocktail, Elderflower and Mint Soda. A perfect drink in the hot summer time. The heat in your body seems to be melting away while you are sipping with the cooling drink.

We were sitting outside of the restaurant, right next to the entrance, as we were waiting for the rest of my friends to arrive, the aroma of the food coming through the entrance door just make you salivating constantly. I knew that I am here for a good meal!

After everyone has arrived, we started to order our food. I came here for the 12 hours beef cheeks sandwich, and it came with no disappointments. The beef cheeks are tender and the BBQ sauce has got some depth in it. For some, it might be a bit too overpowering, but I reckon it is perfect for a bloke's sandwich. Some of us also ordered for the Mushroom sandwich with truffled coddled egg, the smell of the truffle made me wishing I have a second stomach.
Field mushrooms, truffled parmesan,
garlic creme fraiche, rocket,
multigrainand a truffled coddled egg

12 hours beef cheeks, cheddar, sauerkraut,
spanish onion, house glaze, white

Iced Coffee
Regular Cappuccino
Finished the gourmet sandwich with a cup of coffee, that's my kind of weekend. The coffee was not bad, I would have loved to have a stronger coffee, but purely personal preference. The Iced Coffee is served in a jar, simple and rustic.
The Petite Breakfast Board was taken off from the menu. When spoken to the owner about the disappointment of some in the group about this, he mentioned that it was taken off from the menu because it didn't reflect what they want to display on the dish, hence they are reviewing it. You can feel the passion about the food is in every single dish that comes out from the kitchen.

I was hoping that I can try the house cured salmon with my partner ordering a different sandwich, unfortunately they ran out of salmon. I guess just another excuse for me to come back again!

Overall, here is my opinion for this cafe...
Cafe: 8 / 10; Coffee: 7 / 10; Food: 9.5 / 10
Comments: A cafe recommended to catch up with a small group (up to 4) of friends.

The Chalkboard Cafe (Waterloo)

On Sat 18 January, 2014

Haven't been blogging for awhile because of all the eating in the silly season, how we are getting back to our normal routine, search of the best coffee is back on the To-Do list again...

The Chalkboard Cafe took over the old location of Patisse (now in Chippendale). I love Patisse, but let's not compare the 2 in this blog and only review on The Chalkboard Cafe.

It is located inside the building where there are heaps of home decor shops around it. The place has a rustic feel with the decor, and it is quite pleasant to be sitting at the cafe.
Blackboard Drinks Menu

Smoked Salmon Benedict
I always like to order eggs benedict at a new cafe that I have never been, as it shows the chef's skills... I will be blunt with the dish, the poached egg was a bit towards the over-cooked side, the yolk wasn't runny; the salmon was cooked as it has been sitting between the potato cake and the egg for a long while; the potato cake was soggy, there was no crunch to it; and the hollandaise sauce was not up to standard, too acidic and too runny. On the other hand, the eggs benedict with bacon was a bit better because of the crunchy bacon strips.

Breakfast Tasting Plate
The comment about the Breakfast Tasting plate was alright, and nothing to shout about. It would be nicer to have a bit of separation of the hollandaise sauce and the ice-cream. It is not that nice to have the two mixed together.

Regular Cappuccino
The coffee was only a pass, again nothing special.

Cafe: 7 / 10; Coffee: 5 / 10; Food: 3 / 10
Comments: A lot of potential for this cafe, however a lot of improvements are needed. The quality of the hollandaise sauce will need to be reviewed; the procedure of the putting up the eggs benedict will need to be looked at to prevent the salmon being cooked; the plating of the Breakfast Tasting Plate would need to be adjusted (or even change of serving dish).

Three Williams, Redfern

The last few months have been fairly hectic with overseas travels combined with the silly season and new year. Now that it's all over, I guess it's time to start looking up on whats new in Sydney, and having brunches at them all if possible!

First off the rank was Three Williams in Redfern. I emailed Hubes about it and asked if he was keen for a Saturday morning cuppa. He had a trip to Nowra so..... I selfishly decided to go ahead first. :P

I drive by this street fairly regularly and have never noticed it before in the past. The only way giveaway would be the crowd of people on this somewhat quiet street. Luck was on my side as I found a parking spot right in front of the shop. The crowds hasn't built up yet so I got a seat immediately. Score!

Three Williams sits on the fairly quiet side of Elizabeth Street in Redfern. Stepping through their modest doors, I was greeted by a small set of staircase which leads to a cavernous open area with a small kids area to boot.
The first order of the day was obviously the coffee. Single Origin Roasters is used here and nothing bad could be said about how the coffee was made.

Looking through what's offered on the menu made it really hard for Wenni and I to choose since we wanted to try them all. we finally settle for 3 things.  The first thing to arrive was the fish croquette. These arrived in cute little egg cartons to help stand them up. These came straight out of the fryer and was piping hot and crispy. At $3 each, I'd say it's worth it for anything wanting a pre-brunch snack.

Wenni wanted something light so she went for the French Toast. It looked gorgeous when it was served. The crunchy brioche french toast was topped with a dollop of yoghurt and a generous helping of fresh blueberries and raspberries was scattered all over. To finish it off, it was drizzled with lines of Maple syrup and crushed roasted pecans on the side. Delicious. Wenni and I make fruit smoothies every morning and I must say the berries that was served was as good as it gets! You can tell that alot of care goes into the produce that they choose to serve their customers.

Next up was my Prawn Narnie. I'm not sure why it's called a narnie but I'll be sure to ask the manager next week. Basically, it's a homemade Naan bread sandwich. Now I don't do it justice by describing it like that but I have to say, the prawns were nice, large, very fresh and grilled to perfection. It sits on top of a bed of mashed avocadoes, sweet corn, tomato salsa and Aioli. A MUST try when you're there!

After all that, we still had a bit of space left so Wenni ordered herself a Peanut Caramel Milkshake (if you like peanut butter, you'll love this) and I got myself a Banana, medjool date, walnut praline smoothie. An interesting mixture but it definitely blended well with each other.

Whilst the place was constantly busy with not a table vacant, it was refreshing to see that the staff were still able to serve everyone with a smile. The manager, Glen Bowditch certainly leads by example by constantly checking of the tables and refilling glasses of water whenever he could. It's small gestures like these that really wins regulars.  After paying compliments to the staff and kitchen,we fist bumped and I bade him farewell.

Three Williams is definitely a place I'd visit again.
